Chapter 46
Realizing that I was about to vomit, Nick froze for a moment before jumping to his feet. He anxiously cursed, “You only ate fish. Why would you feel like vomiting? Are you pregnant?”
His words sent a chill down my spine, but there was no time to process the shock. I bolted for the restroom, my stomach lurching violently. Leaning over the toilet, I emptied its contents until the nausea finally subsided. When I turned around, Ashton was standing there, his expression unreadable.
“Scarlett, we should go to the hospital,” he stated gruffly, his deep voice carrying no warmth.
“No, I don’t want to go.” I shoved past him and headed for the door.
He caught my wrist, his grip firm but not painful. My temper flared. “Ashton, I told you to leave me alone.”
Holding his gaze, I continued coldly, “If your memory serves you right, you should recall what I told you last night. I want a divorce, as soon as possible.”
His dark eyes narrowed. “Scarlett, do you even know what you’re saying?”
“Of course,” I scoffed. Meeting his gaze, I smirked. “While you’ve been meticulously taking care of Rebecca, our relationship remains ambiguous. Do you enjoy being entangled with two women at the same time?”
His face paled, his lips pressing into a thin line. I knew my words stung, but it was the truth. He needed to face reality.
“What do you want me to do?” he finally asked, his voice laced with frustration.
I didn’t hesitate. “Give me a divorce. Let’s cut ties and go our separate ways.”
“I can’t do that!” he shouted, his frustration spilling over.
I let out a short, mirthless laugh. “Then cut Rebecca off instead. Give her money and ask her to leave your life.”
“Scarlett, who are you to dictate Ashton’s life?” Rebecca’s sharp voice cut through the tension.
I looked past Ashton to see her standing there, fury radiating from her eyes. I smiled mockingly. “Who am I? Well, since Ashton refuses to divorce me and I am still his lawful wife, that gives me every right to speak. He can’t even let me go.”
“You—” Rebecca sputtered, her face flushing red with anger. She wanted to retaliate, but I had no patience for this pointless exchange.
I turned on my heel and strode back to my table, grabbing my bag. Without another word, I left.
Nick trailed after me. “Wait up!”
I turned to him, arching a brow. “What is it?”
“Give me a ride. I didn’t drive today,” he whined.
Scanning him from head to toe, I deadpanned, “We’re not headed in the same direction.”
Ignoring his protests, I got into my car and started the engine.
“Hey! I haven’t even told you my destination! How are you so sure?” he grumbled.
—
The following days were agonizing. My morning sickness worsened, and to avoid Ashton, I sought refuge at Glenwood Apartments. When Macy and I planned to settle in J City, we had each bought a two-room apartment so we could look out for each other. Since my marriage to Ashton, I had stayed at the villa instead, and it had been a while since I last came here. Fortunately, Macy had maintained the place well, making it comfortable to stay in.
After yet another bout of vomiting, Macy handed me a glass of warm water. Her expression turned serious as she eyed me suspiciously. “Scarlett, be honest with me. You didn’t go through with the abortion, did you?”
I had no intention of hiding it from her. Taking a sip of water, I nodded. “I didn’t.”
She was silent for a moment before asking, “What’s your plan now?”
“After the divorce, I’ll move to Q City and raise my child on my own.” It had always been my plan.
Rolling her eyes, she sighed. “I’m not talking about the future. I mean, what are you going to do right now? It’s obvious you’re pregnant. You’re living under Ashton’s nose. Do you think he’s blind? He’s bound to find out sooner or later.”
I knew she was right. I couldn’t just up and leave without arousing suspicion. Ashton would definitely notice if I suddenly disappeared.
After thinking it through, I decided to call Jared. The line connected quickly, but remembering what happened last time Ashton answered, I waited for Jared to speak first.
“Dr. Crest, do you have any medication that can help suppress morning sickness?”
Macy leaned closer, whispering, “Who’s Dr. Crest? And how can he help you?”
I ignored her, waiting for Jared’s response.
“There is medication, but I don’t recommend taking it—it could be harmful. I’ll consult with Devon tomorrow and see if there’s a safer alternative.”
“Alright. Thank you, Dr. Crest.”
“No problem.”
After ending the call, Macy pouted. “So? What’s your relationship with this Dr. Crest?”
I rolled my eyes, playfully pushing her away as I left the bedroom. “Mind your own business and go to sleep already.”
