Chapter 67
“Ms. Larson, you’re not me. How would you know that’s not what I want?” I couldn’t hold back any longer. After all, Jared was listening in too. Stepping into Ashton’s office, I shot Rebecca a cold, steely glare. “Ms. Larson, even if my husband doesn’t love me, we now have a child together. That makes us a real family. You might not get it, but not all couples love each other.”
Both Rebecca and Ashton froze, clearly stunned by my sudden entrance. Rebecca recovered quickly, retorting with disdain, “Do you really think you can make him stay because of your child?”
I gave her a calm, unwavering nod. “I wasn’t sure I could, but seeing your reaction, I think I’ve won. After all, my child and I come first—not you, Ms. Larson.”
Ashton’s expression darkened at my words, but I didn’t even spare him a glance as I continued, “Of course, you’re shameless enough to stay by his side. But after I give birth, he might get bored at home and want something different. By then, you’ll have the chance to provide him with that… fresh experience.”
A loud “Pfft!” echoed from the doorway. I turned to see Joe and Nick standing there, barely containing their laughter.
Nick, with an amused glint in his eyes, drawled, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop on your conversation, but you were so loud I couldn’t help but laugh.”
Joe, however, was furious. He stormed up to Ashton, handing him a file. “You can have your family, but you shouldn’t let someone like Scarlett insult her like this.”
Without another word, he dragged Rebecca away.
I moved to block their path and leveled a cold stare at Joe. “Mr. Quinn, someone like me? What do you mean by that?”
Joe immediately shot back, “You’re selfish, despicable, and heartless!”
I nodded, a mocking smile curving on my lips. “Thank you for the detailed explanation. And what about the woman you fancy?”
Ignoring their stunned expressions, I added with a grin, “Once a btch, always a btch. Ms. Larson might seem sweet enough to make you forget she’s a homewrecker. But the truth is, she forced a wife to abort her baby and framed someone for drug possession. Should we forgive her because she looks fragile?”
“Scarlett, stop spouting nonsense!” Rebecca’s voice was sharp with anger.
I raised an eyebrow. “Desperate much?”
“Enough!” Ashton’s voice was like a lash in the air. He glanced at Joe and ordered, “Send her back home. Don’t let her come back here again.”
Joe opened his mouth, but Jared quickly intervened. “Joe, when you’re back later, come to my office. I have something for your father. It’s for his rheumatism.”
Meanwhile, Nick turned to Ashton. “Mr. Fuller, are you free now? We need to talk.”
Joe had no more words for me. He shot me one last glare before he and Rebecca left.
Turning to Jared, I said, “I need to talk to you.”
I really did.
Nodding, Jared gestured for me to follow. “Let’s go to my office.”
Once inside his office, I collapsed into the chair, exhaustion weighing on me. “I’ve been having dizzy spells lately. My shoulders and spine are killing me.”
Jared immediately got to work, running some checks. After a while, he returned with my diagnosis. “Well, it looks like your dizziness is from staying up too late. You really need to rest more. You’re also showing signs of stress-induced depression. Try to lighten up and keep a positive outlook.”
I rested my chin on my hand, feeling the weight of everything pressing down on me. “I’m going on a business trip to A City. Do you have any sleeping pills I can bring with me?”
He gave me a concerned look. “Yes, but they’re not ideal for your baby. You shouldn’t rely on them.”
I sighed, nodding. If things kept going like this, I wasn’t sure how much longer I’d be able to manage, let alone keep the baby healthy.
As I stepped out of Jared’s office, I nearly bumped into Ashton, who looked furious. My body ached, and I couldn’t bring myself to care about him.
He grabbed my arm as I tried to walk past. “What’s wrong with you?” His voice was low, filled with concern, but there was an unmistakable edge to it.
“I’m still alive,” I muttered, shaking him off and stepping into the elevator.
Back in my office, Stacey was already there, placing a stack of files on my desk. “Ms. Stovall, these are the Fuller Corporation audit reports. Please review them and sign when you’re done.”
