Chapter 73
Macy’s voice came through the phone, still drowsy, “Mm! You go ahead. I’ll be there soon.”
Just as I was about to hang up, a man’s voice interrupted, “You’re awake?”
My heart skipped a beat. Damn it! I hadn’t expected her to bring someone home last night, especially after I’d heard her drunkenly announce she was shopping on Southvale Avenue. What had happened between then and now?
I couldn’t stop myself from asking, my tone sharp with curiosity, “Ms. Markle, pray tell. What’s going on?”
Macy groaned on the other end, her voice somewhat muffled as she spoke to someone. “It’s nothing, Scarlett. Just a little… situation. I’ll tell you everything when I get there. Let’s not make it a big deal.”
I raised an eyebrow, but I decided to hold my tongue for now. Macy was always one to avoid talking about anything personal, especially when it came to her love life or her own mistakes. I knew her well enough to realize I’d have to wait for her to come around and fill me in herself.
Sighing, I hung up and returned to Nick, who was now sitting up in the hospital bed, looking less like the cocky, stubborn guy I’d been dealing with earlier. The bandages on his head looked a little too bulky, and I could tell he wasn’t happy about the situation. Still, I was glad he was okay.
The doctor had just finished checking on him when Nick finally cracked a tired grin. “Why am I in the hospital?”
I smiled awkwardly. “You drank too much last night and fell down the stairs. I had to bring you here.”
Nick’s frown deepened as he processed this. “I fell down myself?”
I nodded guiltily, not sure what else to say. But then, to my surprise, he broke into a grin. “Scarlett, I remembered it was you who shoved me down the stairs. Why are you feeling guilty, huh?”
I couldn’t respond immediately. Instead, I glared at him. “Why did you get drunk in the first place?” I scolded, though my voice softened. “Use your brain. If you’re fine, we can go back now.”
Our business trip had been short, and now with Nick in the hospital, everything had been delayed. The doctor had run his tests, and thankfully, Nick was cleared to leave after a quick change of dressing. Despite everything, Nick insisted that I take responsibility for his misfortune.
“Come on, Scarlett,” he grinned, his typical mischievous self. “You should be taking care of me, since it’s your fault.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re impossible.”
We wrapped up our time in the hospital and headed to the office to meet with Howard. We presented the evidence of the embezzlement, and Howard was shocked. Without wasting any time, he ordered a full investigation of the Finance Department and all the relevant parties involved.
Thankfully, it wasn’t a huge issue in the end. After Nick prepared the final statement, I went through the overall operations of the branch office, and we listened to some reports. As there were no other major problems, we decided to wrap up our business trip.
Before heading back to J City, though, Nick insisted we grab something to eat. Apparently, he was starving after everything that happened. We ended up at the biggest food hall in A City, where I called Macy to invite her out.
It took several rings before she picked up. “Hello?” she answered, still sounding groggy.
“Are you awake? Wake up! I’m at the food hall now!” I said, trying to sound cheerful despite the concern lingering in my mind.
“Mm!” Macy mumbled in response. “You go ahead. I’ll be there soon.”
I was just about to hang up when I heard a man’s voice in the background. “You’re awake?”
I froze. Damn it. Did she get herself a man last night? The thought made me uneasy, and I couldn’t help but ask, “Ms. Markle, pray tell. What’s going on?”
Macy was silent for a moment, clearly trying to avoid the topic. “It’s nothing, Scarlett. Just… a little situation. I’ll tell you everything when I get there. Let’s not make it a big deal.”
I was dying to know what had happened, but I knew Macy well enough to know when she was going to be tight-lipped. I sighed and decided to wait for her to explain in person. Whatever it was, I was sure it was a story worth hearing.
