Chapter 93
When I saw that everything Macy had picked out was pink, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly. “Why is everything so pink? What if my baby turns out to be a boy?”
Macy, still focused on checking out the cots, replied without hesitation, “It doesn’t matter. Whether your baby is a boy or a girl, they’ll need these things. And if your son doesn’t like them, we can always buy new ones after he’s born.”
She was right, of course. Slowly but surely, the items in our cart piled up. As my pregnancy progressed, I would start gaining weight and swelling, so Macy also bought me some skincare products to help with that.
I watched as she carefully placed each item into the cart and couldn’t help but laugh. “Macy, you’re more concerned than I am, and you’re the godmother!”
She chuckled at my comment, but then, out of nowhere, her eyes reddened as she hugged me tightly. “Letty, leave Ashton. I can take care of you.”
I froze for a moment, not understanding where this sudden emotional outburst was coming from. After a brief pause, I patted her shoulder and reassured her, “Why are you being so emotional all of a sudden? I’ll leave Ashton eventually, but I want to do it proudly, not sneak away like a thief.”
Macy nodded, her voice hoarse as she replied, “It’s okay. I’ll wait for you. I’ve already found a place in Q City where the property prices are lower. We can use our savings to buy a small villa there. You, me, and your child could stay there.”
There was something different about Macy. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but something had changed. She seemed to be hiding something and, in that moment, looked sadder than I had ever seen her.
Sighing softly, I smiled and said, “It’s okay. I’m not in such a bad place right now. We still have a long journey ahead of us!”
As the evening wore on, we headed to Glenwood Apartments to drop off the baby items. It was more convenient to leave them there.
I had initially planned to stay in the apartment, but just as I was settling in, my phone rang.
“Letty, someone’s calling you!” Macy’s voice came from the guest room as she worked on assembling the cot. She heard my phone ringing and called out to me.
I had been washing the fruit we’d bought earlier, and wiping my hands, I glanced at the screen. It was Ashton calling.
Frowning, I noticed the time—still not even 9 pm yet.
“Hello, Mr. Fuller,” I answered, keeping my tone polite as I figured he was likely calling for some official matter.
I could hear the sound of the wind roaring through the phone. After a few seconds of silence, Ashton asked, “Where are you?”
“Glenwood Apartments,” I replied, glancing over at the cot Macy had assembled. She had thoughtfully draped a mosquito net around the bed.
“Oh, I see,” Ashton responded, but to my surprise, there was nothing else. The call ended abruptly, leaving me puzzled.
I tossed my phone aside and admired the cot. The more I looked at it, the cuter it seemed.
“Okay, everything’s set. Now all that’s left is for your child to be born!” Macy said, her tone proud as she looked at the cot she’d so carefully assembled. “How am I doing as a godmother?”
I smiled, handing her a fruit. “Very impressive!”
As it was getting late, Macy looked at me and said, “I’ll go take a bath. You look around and see if there’s anything else we need to do.”
Nodding, I sat down in the living room, casually scrolling through my phone. Then, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was food Macy had ordered, I got up to answer the door.
“Macy, did you order food?” I called toward the bathroom.
“No!” came her voice in response.
Before I could say anything else, I looked up and saw a tall man standing at the entrance. I froze. What was Ashton doing here?
“You…” I started, wanting to ask why he had come, but my voice faltered.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” Ashton’s voice was cool, but there was a hint of nonchalance in it.
I shook my head. “It’s not a good time!” I explained. Macy often came out of the bathroom wearing only a towel, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for Ashton to be here now.
“Who’s that, Letty?” Macy’s voice came again from the bathroom.
I glanced at Ashton and quickly replied, “He’s from the estate management team.”
“Estate management?” Ashton raised an eyebrow, but his expression remained unreadable.
I sighed, trying to remain calm, and asked, “What are you doing here? It’s almost 10 pm. Shouldn’t you be home by now?”
Standing at the entrance, Ashton loomed over me, blocking the faint light in the hallway. When I looked up, I found him standing in the shadows.
“I’m here to fetch you,” he said flatly, taking out his car keys and waving them in my direction.
Hearing noises from the bathroom, I quickly shoved Ashton back and yelled, “Macy, I’m going out for a while!”
I closed the door behind me and led Ashton to the stairway, lowering my voice. It wasn’t the time or place for a confrontation.
In a gentler tone, I said, “I’m planning to stay here for a while. Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of my baby.”
“Go back to the villa,” Ashton ordered coldly. “Mrs. Eriksen can take care of you.”
I frowned. “Ashton, I…”
“You can stay here,” he said seriously, “but Mrs. Eriksen and I will move in with you.”
I stood there, momentarily speechless. After a brief pause, I retorted, “It’s too small to fit both of you!”
