Chapter 2

from your backpack, along with the sunscreen spray from the drawer.”  “You haven’t woken up after all this time? You don’t answer my calls. I didn’t even get heatstroke yet, but you did—Ye Chuyao, could it be that you deliberately fainted to avoid helping me?”  “Ye Chuyao, remember that your parents sent you to Jinglan specifically to look after me. If you’re unwilling, I’ll have Dad arrange a transfer for you.”  “Ye Chuyao, did you really hear me? Don’t ignore my WeChat messages!”  “…” From her initial requests to subsequent accusations, Ye Chuxin never showed any concern for her well-being; instead, suspecting she was feigning illness due to her delayed responses, she repeatedly threatened her with transfers.

The threatening words displayed line by line on the screen also evoked numerous memories deep within Ye Chuyao’s mind.

She recalled her initial days as an adopted child of the Ye family. Accustomed to hardship, she was utterly delighted upon seeing the new room, fresh clothes, and a variety of delicious treats arranged for her by her adoptive parents.

To repay the Ye family’s kindness in adopting her, she diligently studied proper etiquette for wealthy households, showed filial piety to her parents and elders, cared for her sister, and treated her younger brother with affection and humility. Yet no matter how well-behaved or diligent she was, she never received a single word of praise. Her adoptive parents regarded her as invisible; her sister treated her like a servant; and her brother saw her merely as an outlet for his frustrations, often mocking her with sarcasm.

However, Ye Chuyao had never complained before. She knew the Ye family had raised her for years, providing her with excellent food and clothing, sending her to the best schools—so enduring such hardships was only right. Take this military training exercise as an example: Ye Chuxin insisted on attending without taking leave to save face. During every break, Ye Chuyao would wipe her sweat, offer water, fan her from the sun, and even massage her shoulders and back—going above and beyond what a typical nanny would do.

Recalling the foolish deeds she had once done at others ‘behest, Ye Chuyao’s expression couldn’t help but darken. Having spent so many years in other worlds, she had naturally matured considerably; what once seemed unclear now became increasingly clear upon reflection. Looking back, she realized how utterly foolish she had been before.

“You really are something, sister! You’ve always watched her faint and be taken to the infirmary—how could you still ask her for help with things!” Liu Qian, being close to Ye Chuyao, naturally saw the long series of messages sent by Ye Chuxin on her phone. Upon seeing this, she couldn’t help but complain, though she didn’t expect her friend to refuse. From high school freshman year until now, she had urged Ye Chuyao countless times, yet Ye Chuyao continued to assist Ye Chuxin without fail, no matter how excessive the requests were.

“Well, you’re right—she really went too far.” But this time, after Liu Qian complained, her friend unexpectedly nodded, quickly typed a reply declining the request, then closed the app and stopped checking Ye Chuxin’s messages.

“…Yao Yao, you? You refused?” For the first time in two years, seeing Ye Chuyao reject Ye Chuxin, Liu Qian rubbed her eyes and pointed at her phone, asking incredulously.

“What if I do it myself? Despite my illness, should I wipe her sweat, pour water for her, and apply sunscreen? Ye Chuxin has both hands and feet—can’t she handle these tasks herself? Besides, I’m her nominal younger sister; if she needs assistance, she can simply hire a servant,” Ye Chuyao retorted without any expression.

“Yao Yao, you’ve finally understood! You were right to think that all along—you came to Jinglan School to study, not to work as a nanny. There’s no reason your sister should keep assigning you such tasks!” Upon hearing this, Liu Qian was momentarily stunned before recovering her composure and saying with relief.

“Alright, let’s not talk about that. I’ve felt much better after taking the medicine. Let’s go sit on the playground and wait for the class monitor to bring us food,” said Ye Chuyao as she got out of bed, put on her shoes, greeted the school nurse, and then walked outside with her friend. She was eager to see what expression Ye Chuxin would have when she received her message—after having been rejected by her for the first time.

The author has something to say: I’ve started a new series – please save it and leave comments! Additionally, my existing works will also be updated daily. Thank you!”Teacher, is Ye Chuyao okay?”  “She’s fine; it’s just heatstroke. She’ll recover after lying down for a while. Once she wakes up, have her take the medicine and skip the afternoon military training.”  “…” On the hospital bed in the school clinic lay a girl wearing a school uniform. Her features were strikingly beautiful, with fair skin; the wide-collared short-sleeved uniform accentuated her petite face. However, she had her eyes tightly closed, her complexion pale, and a cold sweat glistening on her forehead—indicating a rather concerning condition.

By her bedside stood another girl in identical school uniform, anxiously addressing the school nurse. Their voices were loud enough to wake the person on the bed within moments. The young girl opened her eyes, her gaze still somewhat confused.

“Yao Yao, have you woken up?! How are you feeling?” The noise behind her made the girl ahead turn around. Seeing Ye Chuyao awake, she ran excitedly to her bedside and, worriedly, took her hand and asked.

“What time is it now?” Ye Chuyao’s eyes gradually focused; she looked up at the girl with short hair and round face before her for a long moment, then pursed her lips and asked.

“It’s already 11:50; everyone has gone to the cafeteria for lunch. But don’t worry—I’ve asked the class monitor to pack our meals for us, and he’ll bring them here for you.” Upon hearing this, Liu Qian thought she was concerned about lunch arrangements and looked down at the time.

Upon hearing this, Ye Chuyao nodded without further comment. Noticing the phone placed by her bedside, she propped herself up against the bed and picked it up to glance at it: August 25,20xx—exactly one year before her heart transplant surgery, during the military training period preceding her senior high school enrollment. She had been reborn back in that specific year.

“Yao Yao, take the medicine first. After taking it, don’t attend the afternoon military training—I’ll help you get leave from the instructor,” Liu Qian said, noticing her friend was stunned, and handed her the medicine and water on the table.

Ye Chuyao said nothing; she took the medicine bottle and drank the entire bottle of Huoxiang Zhengqi Water in one gulp.

The pungent taste spread throughout her mouth—both spicy and bitter—as it rose directly into her nostrils. Yet Ye Chuyao showed no sign of discomfort; instead, the intense medicinal aroma made her feel significantly more alert.

Liu Qian was her high school deskmate and one of her few close friends, but they lost contact after the college entrance examination when her sister Ye Chuxin fell ill. She was confined at home by her adoptive parents and later forcibly taken to a private hospital for a heart transplant match, during which her own heart was successfully transplanted into Ye Chuxin on her birthday.
